For many of the girls on this season’s Wesley Chapel U19 Girls TARSA team, it started when they were 5 or 6 years old, before there was a Wesley Chapel District Park. Back then, games were played behind Wesley Chapel High School; practices were held on a converted cow pasture off SR 54. Now juniors and seniors in high school, the girls capped off their youth soccer careers in style, winning the Tampa area TARSA championship.
Wesley Chapel SC had not had a TARSA team in the U19 girls age group for a few years. Jeff Olsen and James Casale, long-time coaches at WCAA and WCSC, knew there were a number of girls that would like to play one more season of club soccer, and would like to play with their friends they had developed through the years at the club. Being most of the girls play high school soccer, it was challenging to fit in practices and games, considering the demanding high school schedule. However, the girls demonstrated a true commitment to their team and teammates throughout the season.
Playing teams from local clubs in the area – including Tampa Bay United and West Florida Flames – the Wesley Chapel team ran through the regular season undefeated at 10-0. They then moved on and won the TARSA championship tournament, the first girls team from Wesley Chapel SC to ever bring home a TARSA title.
The team then played in the Harry Olsen Memorial Cup. Needing a shutout in the final game to win the title, they beat West Florida Flames – Barcelona 3-0 to bring home the trophy.
Their final game was in the Battle of the Bay series, where the champion of the Tampa/Pasco league (TARSA) plays the Pinellas County champion (GYSA). Wesley Chapel dominated the team from Clearwater Chargers, winning 7-2 and bringing another trophy to the club.
We congratulate the Wesley Chapel U19 girls on their championship season!
