What better way to spend the holiday break than by competing in a showcase soccer tournament? That was the attitude of our U17 and U15 girls teams, who represented Wesley Chapel Soccer Club in the Orange Classic Showcase, held December 28-30th in Plantation, Florida. Now in it’s 35th year, the Orange Classic Showcase is a girls only tournament that featured teams from 14 different states and was attended by coaches from more than 30 colleges and universities across the U.S.
The U17 Girls team, playing arguably the toughest bracket, earned two wins in group play, highlighted by a gritty 3-2 win over North Atlanta Soccer. In the semifinals, they lost a very competitive game to eventual champion Wellington Wave (Florida). Coach Beth Muzik remarked, “I was very proud of the way our team competed. I was approached by several college coaches who wanted information on some of our players, which is very exciting.”
The U15 Girls team, playing in their first Showcase event, performed very well against tough competition. In their first two games, they lost very competitive games against Schultz Academy – Fort Lauderdale, and eventual champion Atlanta Fire United. The team rebounded with a 1-0 victory over Jets Elite Training (New Jersey). Coach James Casale commented, “this was the first ever showcase event for our team and the first time most of the girls have played an out of state team. We definitely showed we belonged in the tournament and playing this level of competition will help us prepare for the rest of the season.”
The U17 Girls will next compete in the CDL Showcase in February, while the U15 Girls will play in the Disney President’s Day tournament.
