Mauro Mondragon, a Wesley Chapel SC U18 Boys competitive player and a Senior at Citrus High School, is a leader on and off the field. Mauro began playing soccer at the age of 6 years old as a recreational player and developed his skill and passion for the game playing 3v3 tournaments. In 2008 he began playing competitive for Citrus United where he spent his first 2 years of competitive soccer. He then moved to West Pasco Soccer for 3 years and played on a team that made the State Cup finals. In 2013 Mauro tried out for Greater Tampa Bay FC where he began playing under Coach Eddie Oyakhilome. While playing for Coach Eddie O, his team made round of 16 State Cup and in 2015 played into a spot in the State Cup Final Four.
Mauro recently joined Wesley Chapel Soccer Club U17 boys Red team for the 2015/16 season coached by Eddie O, helping the team to a very successful season. As part of his development Mauro has had the opportunity to travel to Brazil, Spain, England and Colombia where he played and trained with professional Coaches at Real Madrid (Spain, La Liga Club), Chelsea, Tottenham and Fulham (England, EPL Clubs). This international experience showed him what it will take to reach his goal of playing professional soccer. According to Coach Eddie, “Mauro is an exceptional player that has great passion for the game. He travels over 1 ½ hours to training and always the first to the field and the last player to leave the field. His game speaks for itself and he also contributes as a quiet but respected leader of the team. He is by far one of the most talented players in the State of Florida and is constantly looking for ways to improve his game. He is a coach’s dream and a model player for the game. I wish I could have 11 Mauro’s on my team. I wish him the best at CD Leganes this summer.”
According to Mauro, “I have enjoyed a great developmental season at Wesley Chapel SC under great coaches such as Coach Eddie Oyakhilome, Ian Pitkoff and Altin Ndrita, who have always been there to push and challenge me all year”. My teammates at Wesley Chapel have also been my support on and off the field and I look forward to another year with them.” Mauro has been invited back to Spain to tryout with the U19 team at CD Leganes who just got promoted to La Liga the coming season. Mauro will be in Spain this summer to pursue his dream of becoming a professional player. He also plans to pursue college studies in Marine Biology.
